Defending yourself while receiving a negative performance review may not be the best idea, career coach Caroline Ceniza-Levine shares with Forbes. Instead, thank your manager and request time to review and share a response, she adds. Ask for examples and metrics during the review to understand where you can improve and how your performance is measured. Also, document your contributions and wins to share during the review. If things take an unexpected turn, reach out for support from your internal allies and stay job-search ready, recommends Ceniza-Levine.

What’s the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear ‘performance review’?

Chances are you feel anxious and stressed. The truth is that most of us dread our performance reviews rather than view it as an opportunity to boost our standing in the workplace.

We see reviews as a one-way conversation where one passively receives the employers’ assessment. Well, it doesn’t have to be this way- you can always choose actively participate in the discussion. Use this time to ask questions, get constructive feedback, address your shortcomings, and find more direction for the coming year.
It’s important to remember that whatever the outcome of the discussion, this evaluation is to aid your growth and develop you professionally.
So, keep an open mind and avoid getting defensive. Try to self-reflect and always look towards the future.
