The good news about conflict is that no meaningful change takes place in its absence. We may struggle to find solutions, but conflict leads to new ways of thinking and new levels of maturity.
Module 1 - Effective Listening
Listening to and acknowledging others might seem deceptively simple, but doing it well particularly in conflict situations, takes true skill. As with any skill, listening well takes practice. Active listening is essential if we wish to communicate effectively. Failing to take the time to understand the problem first, means that we are either speaking or preparing to speak. The result could be mis-communication, conflict and frustration.
- Listen to understand; gain a clear picture of people’s needs and concerns
- Question to uncover needs and diagose first before offering a solution
- Check that understanding is correct and pertinent
- Understand the impact of filters and what to do about them
Module 2 - Getting to Know Yourself
There will always be difficult people. They have different agendas other than contributing to optimal work performance. They come in various packages and make their presence felt through different styles and approaches.
- How do I react to conflict? A questionnaire
- How does my style impact conflict?
Module 3 - Personality Profiling
There’s no doubt about it . . . people are different. As a result, most of the conflict that occurs between people at work and at home is due to certain inborn differenes in the way they think and go about doing things. This module deals with different working styles - needs, values and what motivates people to act in certain ways.
- Apply insights into human behaviour: your own and that of others
- Switch off defence mechanisms when faced with negative comments and actions from others
- How the personalities impact conflict resolution
Module 4 - Understanding Conflict
Conflict is a process, taking time to evolve with intensity levels differing over the life-cycle of the conflict. Understanding the conflict cycle is essential to know where and when to apply different and appropriate strategies and measures for conflict management, resolution and tolerance.
- Don’t get caught up in a vicious cycle of anger
- The blame zone
- The cost of conflict
- The root causes of conflict
- Reflecting on conflict: practical exercise
Module 5 - Practical Ways to Resolve Conflict
You can do a lot to help people with different conflict resolution styles feel more comfortable when dealing with conflict. Talking calmly about your styles and what you need will give you the tools to deal with conflict in difficult times.
- An analysis of different conflict resolution styles
- Interpret your scores
- Avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise and collaboration
- A case study
